Reversi Rules
Reversi is quick to learn, but the rules matter because every legal move must flip at least one opposing disc. If you searched for Othello rules, this is the same core browser-game guide you need.
1. Starting position
The match starts on an 8x8 board with four discs in the center. Two are black, two are white, and black makes the first move.
2. What counts as a legal move
You may place a disc only if that move traps one or more opposing discs in a straight line between the disc you just placed and another disc of your own color. Lines can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
3. Flipping discs
After a legal move, every trapped opposing disc in those lines flips to your color immediately. If a move flips nothing, it is not allowed.
4. Passing and ending the game
If a player has no legal move, that turn is passed. The game ends when the board is full or neither player can move. The side with more discs on the board wins.
Quick beginner checklist
- Check corners before counting flips.
- Do not hand easy edge access to your opponent.
- Use move hints early, then turn them off when you are ready.
- Expect the disc count to swing late in the game.
Reversi and Othello
Most players use both names for the same classic disc-flipping game. If you want the naming context, read Reversi vs Othello.
